New Orleans Under Water

August 30th, 2005 | Category: Uncategorized

The pumps and levees are failing in New Orleans and for the first time in recent history, a large American city is being evacuated. This ominous evacuation warning is evidence that things are getting very serious in New Orleans.

Gas Prices are Out of Control!

August 30th, 2005 | Category: Uncategorized

Gas prices are at $2.75 a gallon as of today and only going up. Enough is enough! This is getting ridiculous. Am I supposed to believe that 35¢ a gallon worth gasoline came from the oil derricks directly affected by Hurricane Katrina? That is utterly ridiculous! This is price gouging of the worst variety because it makes people in the petroleum market rich while us poor saps who just want to get to work pay at the pump.

BOOOOO HISSSSS! I am sick of this! Are there any ideas out there? I don’t want to hear about supply and demand because what we are seeing today has NOTHING to do with that. It is opportunistic people taking advantage of a tragic situation on the gulf coast. And we are paying for it….

2005’s Most Overused Corporate Term

August 27th, 2005 | Category: Uncategorized

Alright, every year a word rises to the top of the Corporate lingo ladder. This year the winner of that dubious title is “vet/vetting/vetted”. (Obviously there are different tenses and so forth, the the root word is “to vet”. It is a verb, and here is the definition from Dictionary.com:

  1. To subject to thorough examination or evaluation: vet a manuscript.

Can I begin to explain how tired I am of hearing that word. If you listen to any technology news or game news, you will hear that word at least 12 times a day.

The problem I have is this. Where was this word 12 months ago or even 6 months ago? There is nothing like the corporate community and their word fads. From the people who brought you “ramp up”, another favorite of mine, comes vet.

“We’re not ready to release this program from beta, it hasn’t be fully vetted.” “The fuel cell won’t be ready for public consumption until it has been completely vetted.” Vetted? Give me a break! What is wrong with tested? Some goof ball in a cubicle in San Francisco got out a Thesaurus and found some defunct word, it got legs and now my skin is crawling.

I don’t know if there are any typos in this blog, it hasn’t been completely vetted. It is still in beta.

Mary Hadley Begins School Today

August 24th, 2005 | Category: Uncategorized

Today is Mary Hadley’s first day of school. I haven’t felt much emotion about it, and I figured I would get a free pass. But, it is 6:49 and in around an hour we are going to take her to her first day of Kindergarten and I am starting to feel it. Megan knew for a long time that she was going to be emotional, but it is becoming clear that this is going to be an emotional day for me too.

It is a great day, and a big milestone in Mary Hadley’s life. We’re not getting this one back so I am going to enjoy and celebrate the experience. I won’t let it slip by.

Blogger Now Offers a Microsoft Word Plug-in

August 17th, 2005 | Category: Uncategorized

Now you can download a plug-in that puts a Blogger toolbar right into Word. In fact, I am posting this entry using the plug-in. Since this is the first time I have ever used it, I don’t know how it will work. I don’t foresee using it to publish to the blog very often, but it does mean I don’t have to open a browser to post. Is that really all that cool? I don’t know yet.

Rumor: CFH 2.0 Finally To Air in USA

August 13th, 2005 | Category: Uncategorized

A yet to be confirmed rumor has it that CFH will begin to air new episodes on G4TV starting early in September. Likely confirmation soon.

You will have to forgive the look of the site in this link, but if this is true, I am very happy. It seems that the rumor is that Call For Help, one of the good shows from TechTV may be coming back to G4TV, the network that bought and then summarily gutted TechTV.

If this is true, I am extremely excited. Call For Help is a great tech show that will breathe some life into the monotonous, homogenized game only network.

Leo continued the Call For Help show when it was picked up in Canada. It’s been a bit of a cold winter since because we can’t get it down here. Now there may be hope.
