Microsoft’s Update Tuesday

Last week, Microsoft had one of the biggest update Tuesday in history. There was only one other time when the big M had so many updates. If you are a Netscape user then you definitely recognized the scope of the update because your browser stopped working. A few years ago that would have been seen as anti-competitive, but now that Netscape is all but an internet oddity, little was made of it.

This week we are back to reality. This morning the little yellow shield of doom was in the bottom corner of my computer. I clicked it and it was Microsoft’s little love note to me, an update to Windows Genuine Advantage.

Microsoft: “Good Morning Mr. Williams”
Me: “ok”
Microsoft: “We first want to thank you for all the thousands of dollars you have dropped on Microsoft software all these years. You have been a loyal customer. And… we brought you this as a token of gratitude. First, we need you to pee in this cup…thank you. Next, we need you to give us a blood sample…fantastic…and finally a retina scan. You know you never can be to careful with your customers. If you don’t treat them like criminals then they might steal. 3.2% of your profits, and we can’t have that.

Again Mr. Williams, thank you for your years of loyalty and we know where your children are.

It is comforting to know what an advantage it is to own Microsoft software.
