I am on Pownce

July 27th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

Hooray, I finally got my invitation for Pownce. Pownce is a microblogging tool that is a lot like Twitter, only better. I may be the only person in my circle of friends who even knows what this is, so if this makes no sense, apologies.

By the way, I do have 6 invitations to Pownce if you are interested. I am only going to give them to friends and family, so riff raff need not apply. But if you know me, and you want a Pownce invite. Come and get it!!!

Happy Birthday Mary Hadley

July 22nd, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

Today is MH’s Birthday and we have a big day planned for her. I know it’s weird to have a Sunday sleepover party, but that is the beauty of having a birthday in the Summer.

When I was younger I would have killed for a Summer birthday. I had a friend who lived down the street fom me growing up who had a Summer birthday. He got to have his parties at the local water park called Wet Willy’s…no snickering. That was the coolest thing ever…at least in my seven year old mind

I guess I am getting to live a little of that through my daughter, but at the price of having a house full of seven year old girls…hmmm

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

July 12th, 2007 | Category: OS, Ubuntu

I just installed the new Ubuntu version, Feisty Fawn. It found my windows install and kept it from being deleted or locking it away from me. Instead it installed a screen at the beginning that allows me to decide which OS to use. That is the same as the old version.

I had some problems at first. The first couple of times I booted the os, it locked up. I don’t exactly know why. I unplugged a usb hard drive that I have, and re-booted many times. I also opened the OS in Linux’s version of ‘Safe Mode’. And, now it is working.

I don’t know what I did, but of all those things, something must have worked. It seems to be working.

I just got notification that there are some updates to download. I am going to start playing so I will bid you farewell. I will let you know what I find…

Online Speak and Spell

July 06th, 2007 | Category: 1980s, eighties, nostalgia, speakandspell, texasinstruments, toy

Speak and SpellWhat, are you kidding me? Today in the office I was trying to explain the sound of the Speak and Spell toy from Texas Instruments. It was a little laptop type game from the early eighties that looks ridiculous now but was the stuff back when it came out. Just like the Atari, this is one of those games that takes you right back to your childhood if you are currently in your 30’s like me.

You need to check out this online Speak and Spell. It works just like you remember. It even has the On and Off song/sound effect that I was trying to explain to my co-worker.

Sprint = Idiot

July 05th, 2007 | Category: AT&T

Sprint, a company hemorrhaging money, has sent out a letter to it’s customers who have called customer service too often to let them know that their service will be terminated at the end of July…WHAT?!? Are you serious?

The company I work for has Sprint phones, and we have had HORRIBLE service with them. When we have problems, and yes we seem to have an inordinate amount of problems with Sprint, it is incredibly hard to find someone who seems to know anything.

On many occasions, we have received assurances that a problem had been resolved only to hear from someone else in the company that those assurances were baseless do to company policies.

Now, Sprint is firing its own customers… what a joke! Could this be the beginning of the death watch for Sprint. I suggest using your number portability and head over to Verizon if you likes the CDMA, or go to AT&T…anything would be better giving your money to Sprint.

This is a PR nightmare. Sprint = Idiot…

Nintendo Wii is Changing Gaming

July 05th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized

EA just released some information that upcoming games it produces on the Wii will come with two settings. One is the advanced setting where the games will be more realistic and more engrossing for gamers. The other setting is very interesting. EA is calling it “Family Play”. It is a tip of the hat to the new movement in gaming towards a more inclusive gaming experience.

The Nintendo Wii has introduced a bunch of people to gaming who normally would not have played video games. The Wii-mote, Nintendo’s revolutionary controller, makes many games more intuitive and easier to pick up for non-gamers. It allows you to emulate the real life movements that translate into gameplay. In other words, when you are playing tennis, the controller becomes a tennis racquet. If you are playing golf, the controller becomes a virtual golf club, and so on.

This natural motion has made the Nintendo Wii very popular in the family market, and now the big guys in game design are taking notice. I personally like playing the current version of the EA titles, but taking away some of the technical junk and being able to just simply throw a football sounds like fun. I get tired of all the complexity of Madden, and a stripped down version sounds like a lot of fun!
