Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and yes you can run Ubuntu on a mac on a virtual machine for free with Sun’s VirtualBox. In fact, you can run just about any operating system you want to all within a window inside OSX.

Running a virtual machine is nothing new on Macs. Ever since Apple moved to Intel processors, virtualization came along for the ride. Virtualization means that you can run computer operating systems that are designed for Windows PC hardware on Macintosh.

There are two main players for creating virtual machines on Macs, Parallels and VMware Fusion. Both of those products are great, but they cost $70 each. If you are like me, and you have no real reason to run alternate operating systems, $70 is a lot to pay just to play around.

Last week, while I was listening to Twit.tv’s MacBreak Weekly, Leo Laporte talked about a program from Sun that allows you to create virtual machines for free. Sun’s VirtualBox is a full-featured machine virtualization solution. Creating a Linux virtual machine was extremely easy.

I downloaded VirtualBox and installed it on my computer. I downloaded the latest ISO file of Ubuntu and saved it on my desktop.

I opened VirtualBox and simply followed the instructions on the wizard that started when I first opened VirtualBox. I created a new virtual machine and then installed Ubuntu.

I was a little nervous doing it for the first time, but it didn’t take too much geekiness to get it all working. If you are somewhat good with computers, this should be no problem.

Right now, I am writing this blog post inside Linux on a virtual machine on my MacBook. It works.

I don’t really know what I will do with this other than simply play, but I was afraid that once I moved over to Apple computers full time, I would lose my chance to play with Linux. Now, that is no longer true.

The only problem I am having is I can’t make the screen any bigger than 800 x 600. That is a little confining, but I bet if I up my video RAM, that will be fixed.

Anyway, it is fun to geek it up every once in a while.

You Look Nice Today

Originally uploaded by rcarver

There is a podcast called You Look Nice Today. It is one of my favorites. It is put out by three guys who found each other through Twitter. Each found the others tweets interesting and more importantly, funny. They got in contact and decided, why not spread our mirth to a wider audience, a listening audience. The world would be a better place after all. Hey, and we all wear glasses, and we could always talk about that, though they never have.

The podcast normally consists of three lads: Merlin Mann, Scott Simpson, and Adam Lisagor. Also pictured here is Jonathan Coulton, you ought to Google him now…his music delights, and a man who we all know and have grown to love, sitting down in front is John Hodgman, but you may know him better as ‘PC’.

Apparently there is a brand-new You Look Nice Today podcast out or coming out soon that features all these fine fellows. I may not be able to sleep.

If you are of the Podcast persuasion, then get on over to iTunes and subscribe to You Look Nice Today…today. You will not be disappointed.

Veronica BelmontOk, I don’t have any, and I mean any, inside info on this, but while watching the latest Tekzilla video podcast, Patrick and Roger gave some hints about the fact that they had “maybe” found a new co-host for the show. The co-host position was left vacant when Jessica Corben left to go and start two new shows on the network, popSiren and The Digg Reel.

In the meantime, Veronica Belmont has done a couple of guest appearances on the show, and did a great job. Veronica got her start on a CNET podcast, Buzz Out Loud with Tom Merritt and Molly Wood as the producer. Early on she chimed in sporadically, but over time she became more and more involved until she was for all intents and purposes the third host.

Jason Calacanis, ex-Weblogs, inc, ex-AOL, and present grand poobah at the human powered search engine Mahalo, snatched Belmont up to host a new video podcast called Mahalo Daily. Mahalo Daily had a predictably bumpy start but matured quickly to become a very enjoyable daily vidcast.

Recently on guest appearances Veronica has announced that she was moving on from Mahalo Daily to a new and secret project.

Mark my words, Veronica Belmont will be the next co-host on Tekzilla, making yet another addition to the now very formidable Revision3 team. She will be a great co-host because she is fun to watch and she almost always has interesting insights that add a much needed female influence on the show. I have missed Jessica Corben but I look forward to Veronica Belmont.

By the way. Now that Revision3 has matured, I officially no longer miss TechTV.

Thank you Presentation Zen for finding this cool little video about typesetting the old fashioned way…I mean the really old fashioned way.

South by Southwest is three conferences all rolled into one. First there is South by Southwest Interactive. It is focused on web and web development. It is the biggest geek party on earth. Mouth-breathers, neck beard-ers, and the socially inept let their hair down for a week of partying and passing out business cards. If you are a web startup…you have to be there. I wish I could have gone. Judging by all the twitters and blog entries, it was a lot of fun.

SXSWi lasts for a week. After that the South by Southwest turns into a music and film festival. The people there are a lot more mainstream, and the contrast in the atmosphere is quite funny. Justine Ezarik has been there during both phases of the festival and did a man on the street that is entertaining.

To listen to the Web 2.0 crowd, you would think that everyone is into this, but apparently that couldn’t be further from the truth.

If you like what I write about on this blog, and are interested to see what news items I find interesting, check out my Google Reader news RSS feed. Subscribe to it in Google Reader or the RSS aggregator of your choice. If you aren’t an RSS maven don’t fear. You can also see what I am reading on my Google Reader Shared Items page.

Yesterday, I finally decided how and when I would use Google Readers “share” function. Google Reader allows you to click a link called “share” that will make a list of news items that you find interesting. That list automatically creates a page and an RSS feed that others can subscribe to.

I have been using the share function on a hit and miss basis for well over a year now, but I didn’t have any rules.  Now I do.  From now on, if I take the time to actually read a story, I will share it.  Simple.  That means if the subject matter of a news story or blog entry piques my interest, then it is good enough to share.

How does that effect you?  Well I can be your source of sorted geek news.  Subscribe to my feed in your aggregator, and then maybe we can discuss the news of the day.

I just uploaded the backend of my blog to WordPress 2.5. It is a lot cleaner and makes writing posts easier by hiding a lot of the more technical stuff you don’t use often a little deeper in the site. I realize that this is a little inside baseball for most people who read this blog, but hey I can geek out a little every once in a while.

The interface is a lot cleaner and uses different shades of light blue for the different sections of the page. It is actually quite pleasant to look at. Obviously this is the first time I have used it so I can’t give a real review, but on first blush it is nice. I likes it a lot.

On another note, I am always a little scared when I upload a new version of WordPress to my server. You see, I no longer use a hosted blog service like blogger. If you use blogger, it is up to them to keep the backend working. If it screws up, you can relax knowing that there are Google engineers pulling their hair out trying to get everything fixed.

Now that I run my own blog software, if everything blows up, it is on me. To be honest it is kind of exhilarating, but it’s also scary. I have a lot of content that I have uploaded and written over the past 5 years. I would hate to lose it. Maybe I should back up more.

Cool New Features

One of the coolest new features is how this new version automates the updating of plugins.  In WordPress, you can augment the functionality of your blog by installing plugins.  I use one called Twitter Tools to post my tweets right here on my blog.  I have a ton of other plugins that I use to make it easier on me to use WordPress.  In this version of WordPress, updating out of date plugins is as simple as hitting a link on the dashboard.  Awesome.  To make it work, you have to put your FTP settings in a form that pops up the first time you click the update link.  After that it works.  Click the update link under the out of date plugin, then click the ‘Proceed’ button and boom it just works.  ROCK AND ROLL… I love it.

Bug Fixes?

There is one bug that annoys me and it hasn’t been addressed by WordPress. When you embed a video from Youtube or other video site, it works fine the first time you publish the post. If you go back to your post later and then republish, WordPress messes up the html and makes the video malfunction. I am about to test this new version of WordPress to see if it fixes that problem. I know I can’t be the only person to have experienced this problem.

—-Update—-

Hooray. It now works. The video embed bug is now dead! Hooray. Embed videos to your hearts content!!!

Ariadne copy There is a newish trend called Alternate Reality Games. It is an elaborate game that goes on in the real world but is heavily supplemented by an online component. Companies such as 42 Entertainment design websites and blogs that help the players engage in this alternate reality. These sites establish the fictional narrative and give clues to the players. These clues can lead to other websites or real places around the world. Players engage in this engrossing game in an interesting way. Alternate Reality gaming is a mashup of online gaming and real world role playing.

If it sounds geeky, it probably is, but it is interesting.

There is a new Alternate Reality game that is being sponsored by McDonalds that seems to be related to the upcoming Olympics. It is about a young woman name Ariadne who recently woke up in a corn field in South Africa with amnesia. She has a tattoo on her arm in esperanto that means “find the lost ring”. It is your job as the player of the game to help her find her identity among other things that have yet to be revealed.

Apparently, there are more characters who have yet to be revealed. It is believed that this game will continue until the Beijing Summer Games in August.

This may not be something that you would ever want to do, but it is still interesting. It could be very fun. Imagine having a limitless budget and the ability to travel anywhere. It could be your very own personal Amazing Race.

Wow, finally I can post to my blog from my phone easily. I just uploaded a new plugin called wphone, and it seems to be working really well. I have tried to blog from my phone somewhat successfully but because I have used all sorts of different categories or tags or whatever you want to call them I had to scroll like 15 minutes to get to the window to enter the post. Needless to say, I didn’t want to put myself very often so I didn’t post much from my phone. Now if I could just speed up my thumb typing, all would be good in the world.

I just downloaded a Firefox plug-in (Add-on) called ScribeFire and I am testing it right now. My blog is a WordPress blog, and it has a pretty good editing interface that comes part and parcel with the software that is installed on my server.

I have been using WordPress for the last 4 months and have been completely happy with the interface, but today, I was looking at Leo LaPorte’s Wakoopa software feed, and it said that he was using MarsEdit, a blog editing software package for the Mac, and it got me to wondering if there is software available for Windows, and lo and behold, here is software that integrates right into my favorite browser, Firefox.

Powered by ScribeFire.
